Ofsted recognises Abraham Moss Community School’s inclusive culture and ambitious education

Abraham Moss Community School is celebrating the publication of its latest Ofsted report, which recognises the school’s warm and inclusive community, ambitious curriculum and strong commitment to pupils’ personal development.

The report states that pupils “speak proudly about their identities and celebrate diversity and difference” and “receive a warm welcome to this vibrant school community, where inclusion is central to the school’s work”.

Inspectors found that pupils “demonstrate mature, respectful behaviour” and show “a genuine eagerness to learn”. The report adds that pupils “value the opportunities that school provides”, approaching their education with a positive attitude.

The school’s commitment to inclusion and pupil leadership was recognised. Ofsted noted that leaders have a precise understanding of the school’s context and the community it serves. Staff know pupils and their families well and “make every effort to understand pupils’ individual needs to make sure that everyone feels fully included in the life of the school”. As a result, “most pupils attend often, feel safe and are happy”.

Inspectors praised the school’s curriculum, stating that pupils “benefit from an ambitious and varied curriculum” through which they develop “the knowledge and skills they need to thrive personally and academically”.

Teachers were recognised for their “secure subject knowledge”, while the curriculum was described as well planned and designed to build on previous learning. Ofsted also found that pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) have their needs “accurately identified” and that refinements to pupil passports have improved the precision of information shared with teachers.

The report highlights the school’s work to raise aspirations through “high-quality encounters with employers, post-16 providers and meaningful work experience”. Initiatives including ‘job of the week’, college taster days and employer assemblies help pupils make informed decisions about their next steps.

The report also highlights the breadth of opportunities available beyond the classroom. Pupils take part in trips, clubs and activities that “develop their interests and broaden their horizons”. Ofsted particularly noted opportunities such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and trips abroad, which disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND value.

Josette Arnold, headteacher at Abraham Moss Community School, said: “We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the inclusive and ambitious community we have here at Abraham Moss. Our pupils’ pride in their identities, enthusiasm for learning and commitment to making a difference are a source of great pride. We will continue to build on these strengths, ensuring that every pupil has the opportunities and support they need to thrive.”

Jane O’Brien, CEO of The Dean Trust, added: “We are immensely proud of the staff and pupils at Abraham Moss Community School. They have come such a long way, and I am so pleased that the Ofsted report reflects that journey and the school’s many strengths. This reflects how hard everyone works to give pupils the best possible opportunities in life.”
